Taking a break from your normally scheduled blog post…

Do you have an accent?

That’s what I’ve been asked recently, in what seems to be a newish Internet meme. The question is interesting to me anyway, but doubles since I do both anthropology and now apparently linguistics and ETAP, which includes bilingual studies. You know…how people talk.

So…here’s the little quiz:

If you’d like to participate, here are the directions:

Say the following words:

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

And answer these questions:

  1. What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
  2. What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
  3. What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  4. What do you call gym shoes?
  5. What do you say to address a group of people?
  6. What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
  7. What do you call your grandparents?
  8. What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
  9. What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  10. What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

  1. You sound pretty much how I would’ve guessed…though the *totally* laid back PNW “accent” oozes hehe. I think it’s more of a tempo than a pronunciation difference though. That’s a good thing! We’re super stressed in NJ and somewhat abrasive sounding LOL.

I’ve never heard anyone pronounce again differently, though I guess it should be ah-gain if you’re being British ;D

The only things that sounded different to me were pajamas and again (when you say it your way) – I heard your “a” sound difference that you called me out for in water.

BTW, no sun showers?????? You’re scaring me…there’s no sun in Portland is there???
