I’ve got a ‘Fever’, and the only cure isn’t cowbell

Highlight of my week?

No, it wasn’t the fact that I got free box seats for the Paisley Party (haha!) at the Rose Garden Friday night, which also included free beer.

And it wasn’t the fact that I’m actually starting to sell stuff on my Etsy.

Indeed.

It was DEFINITELY the fact that I got a sneak peek at Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone, out on March 3.

I was a little bit skeptical after hearing her released single, “People Got A Lotta Nerve,” to be honest. It was a nice song, don’t get me wrong, it just didn’t live up to the high expectations I had set for dear Neko. If this song was a reflection (or even a mere representation) of the album, I was setting myself up for disappointment.

But then I heard the rest of the album.

And while said song fit in perfectly to the rest of the album, some of her other songs show off her pipes and her writing much better. It’s a lush soundscape of her rich vocals, minimalist instrumentation, and an almost oldschool echo-ey quality to it that I can’t even begin to name.

There are several excellent songs on this piece of genius (yes, I just called it a piece of genius). I really can’t stop listening to the second half of the album, which includes such gems as “Middle Cyclone,” “Prison Girls,” and “The Pharaohs.” You will NEED to listen to these songs.

But my absolute favorite song?

“Fever.”

The song is literally breathtaking from beginning to end. Starting with soft bells, even! Then moving into some guitar solos. And her voice. And lyrics.

She belts, “I caught his words in my open mouth, I gagged and choked and spit them out, I heard him turn as he did hear my tiny heart beat in his ear, I was already running.”

Who knew such violence could be so beautiful? But isn’t that how love is?

Either way, I’m totally smitten.

  1. I have to say, that’s an awesome picture of Neko. The colors are so saturated and beautiful 🙂 Oh, and she’s nice, too…
